"Balance gives every shot a better chance."
— Bat Skills Cricket Principle #2
Batting is often celebrated through its most memorable moments.
A perfectly timed cover drive.
A commanding pull shot.
A straight drive that races back past the bowler.
These are the moments that capture our attention because they are where the runs are scored.
Yet beneath every great stroke lies a quality that rarely receives the same recognition.
Balance.
It may be one of the most overlooked skills in batting, yet it quietly influences almost every movement a player makes.
Balance helps players judge the ball more clearly, move more efficiently, and remain composed under pressure.
Without balance, technique begins to break down.
With balance, every batting skill has a better opportunity to succeed.
That is why balance remains one of the foundations of great batting.
Balance Creates Control
One of the greatest misconceptions in batting is that balance simply means standing still.
It doesn't.
Great balance is dynamic.
It allows players to remain in control while the body is constantly moving.
Whether driving forward, moving deep into the crease against pace, advancing confidently to a spinner, or adjusting late to a changing length, balanced players maintain control throughout every movement.
Their head remains steady.
Their weight transfers naturally.
Their movements appear relaxed rather than rushed.
That is why the world's best batters often make difficult shots appear remarkably simple.
Balance allows technique to function.
Technique allows confidence to grow.
Confidence allows players to perform under pressure.
When Balance Breaks Down
Many dismissals begin long before the bat reaches the ball.
Players reach instead of moving.
Their weight falls away.
Their head drifts outside the line of the ball.
Their body becomes disconnected from the shot they are trying to play.
The result is often mistimed strokes, edges, poor contact, or missed deliveries.
Good balance cannot guarantee success.
But poor balance makes success significantly more difficult.
Developing Better Balance
Understanding balance is the first step.
Developing balance requires something more.
It requires opportunities to repeatedly apply that understanding.
Players can study great batters.
They can watch instructional videos.
They can read quality coaching resources.
Each contributes to a better understanding of the skill.
Real improvement, however, comes from repeatedly applying those principles in practice.
That is where purposeful repetition becomes so valuable.
The Roundabout™ Connection
One principle has stood the test of time.
Players improve when they have more opportunities to perform purposeful, quality repetitions.
That learning principle became one of the inspirations behind Roundabout™.
Roundabout™ was designed to create more opportunities for purposeful batting practice using a real cricket ball and a real bat.
It also enables players to practise a variety of batting scenarios that challenge balance, footwork, timing, judgment, and decision-making.
Every quality repetition becomes another opportunity to learn.
Over time, understanding becomes movement.
Movement becomes confidence.
Confidence becomes performance.
That is why Roundabout™ exists.
Not to replace coaching.
Not to replace net practice.
But to create more opportunities for purposeful batting practice and player development.
Knowledge builds understanding. Repetition builds skill. The objective is to accelerate learning. A longer and more successful career is often the result.
🏏 Bat Skills Cricket Principle #2
Balance gives every shot a better chance.
🏏 Bat Skills Cricket Coaching Cue #2
Before asking whether the shot was right...
Ask whether your balance allowed you to play it well.
Great batting is not about forcing the body to fit the shot.
It is about allowing balance to support every movement.
The Bat Skills Cricket Takeaway
Power may capture attention.
Timing may earn admiration.
Balance quietly makes both possible.
Develop your balance.
Everything else becomes easier.
Because great players are built on great foundations.
